Concerts

02 JUNE, 2009 – Concert of Dimitar Shatrovski at the City Gallery, Plovdiv, Bulgaria

I was invited by my good friend, the artist Kiril Ivanov, to take part in a joint exhibition of young Plovdiv artists at the City Gallery, Plovdiv. I presented three canvas-scores, alkyd paint on canvas (100-70 cm).

There are no performers in this concert, which is a challenge to the audience who must try to imagine how the piece sounds.
Three pieces – Universum for Instrument or Voice, Universum for Orchestra, Music for Piano 30.XII.2007 – comprise one another.
An attempt to visualize everything which is happening in the universe in a single moment: movement, thought, feeling, energy… my understanding of myself. Bow before the living God…prayer.

The pieces should be viewed from left to right.

UNIVERSUM FOR INSTRUMENT OR VOICE

alkyd paint on canvas (100-70 cm)

The piece contains:
• intermission of indefinite duration;
• tone of indefinite range and duration;
• intermission of indefinite duration.

The performer himself chooses the pitch and duration of the tone to play or sing and the length of the intermissions.

I would perform the piece in the following fashion:
• fifteen minute intermission;
• sound of the tone (depending on the instrument/voice, I would choose a tone with more overtones);
• intermission of circa five minutes.

UNIVERSUM FOR ORCHESTRA

alkyd paint on canvas (100-70 cm)

The piece represents cluster with the largest possible spectrum. The role of the conductor is to decide the cluster of various instruments depending on whether he wishes to have timbre differences.
At the beginning and end there is a “variation” of the strokes and dynamic. The continuation is circa five minutes.

MUSIC FOR PIANO 30.XII.2007

alkyd paint on canvas (100-70 cm)

The piece is performed with the aid of a clustertool. This is a device which furnishes the possibility of reaching all the black and white keys so they can sound simultaneously.
Through mechanization of the clustertool it will be possible to play many sounds (maximum 88) which are impossible for an individual or a few pianists.

Night by Albert Giraud
Heavy, gloomy giant black moths
Massacred the sun’s bright rays;
Like a close-shut magic book
Broods the distant sky in silence.
From the mists in deep recesses
Rise up scents, destroying memory.
Heavy, gloomy giant black moths
Massacred the sun’s bright rays;
And from heaven earthward bound
Downward sink with sombre pinions
Unperceived, great hords of monsters
On the hearts and souls of mankind. . .
Heavy, gloomy giant black moths.

1. Circles - Gospodin Dimitrov - kaval, Peter Andreev - contrabass, Ivan Bachev - vibraphone, Dimitar Shatrovski - piano
Countless circles with different diameters are rotating in the space. They get close to you and then move away. The rotation turns into vibrations and blends into the whole.. From the depth of this chaos sounds a theme from Shnitke............

27 MAY, 1998 – Concert of Dimitar Shatrovski at the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts, Plovdiv, Bulgaria

1. De Profundis – for piano, Radosveta Harkova - piano, Dimitar Shatrovski - voice
This piece is like a prayer to The Most High for inner peace to all artists. It is dedicated to my friend the artist - Kiril Jeliazkov (www.kiriljeliazkov.com)

2. Columbine – Shmilena Shmileva - sopran, Dimitar Shatrovski - piano
Listening to Arnold Shoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire", I wrote this song by the words of Albert Giraud, to express my idea for beautyness and almost surrealistic romanticism.

Colombine by Albert Giraud
The pallid buds of moonlight
Those pale and wondrous roses
Bloom in the nights of summer—
O could I pluck but one!
My heavy heart to lighten,
I search in darkling river
The pallid buds of moonlight,
Those pale white wondrous roses.
Fulfilled would be my longing
If I could softly gather,
With gentle care besprinkle
Upon your dark brown tresses
The moonlight’s pallid blossoms.

3. The Weeping Men - Dimitar Shatrovski - violin, Ivan Bachev - piano

4. Silence - Dimitar Shatrovski - contrabass, Ivan Bachev - piano
Looking for a way to create silence through sound, I reached to some conclusions:
Creating silence through sound can be achieved by using long standing notes in a very slow tempo; repeating the notes over and over again till the listener get accustomed to the slow monotonous melody and stop hearing it.

5. Psalms (113, 117, 149 ) - Georgi Sultanov - bariton, Shmilena Shmileva - sopran, Dimitar Shatrovski - piano

Psalm 113
Hallelujah! Praise, you servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord.
May the name of the Lord be blessed from now and to eternity.
From the rising of the sun until its setting, the name of the Lord is praised.
The Lord is high over all nations; upon the heavens is His glory.
Who is like the Lord, our God, Who dwells on high,
Who lowers [His eyes] to look in the heavens and the earth?
He lifts the pauper up from the dust, from the dungheap He raises up the needy,
To seat [him] with princes, with the princes of His people.
He seats the barren woman of the house as a happy mother of children. Hallelujah!
Psalm 117
Praise the Lord, all nations, laud Him, all peoples.
For His kindness has overwhelmed us, and the truth of the Lord is eternal. Hallelujah!
Psalm 149
Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song; His praise is in the congregation of the pious.
Israel will rejoice with its Maker; the children of Zion will exult with their King.
They will praise His name in dance; with timbrel and harp they will play music to Him.
For the Lord takes delight in His people; He lauds the humble with salvation.
The pious will exult in glory; they will sing praises on their beds.
Lofty praises of God in their throats and a double-edged sword in their hands,
To wreak vengeance upon the nations, contentions upon the kingdoms.
To bind their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron.
To execute upon them a written judgment; that will be splendor to all His pious ones. Hallelujah!
